Swimmers compete in thrilling House races

MORE than 150 students took part in more than 80 races in this year’s thrilling House Swimming Competition.

One of the most popular events in the school’s sporting calendar, this year’s was the first to take place since the pandemic.

Students from all year groups competed in freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly with races, including medley relays, ranging from one to three lengths.

Year 8 student Lena Nowaczek, who took part in several races with friends, competing against classmates from other Houses, described it as huge fun: “Everyone was cheering on their House, and it created a competitive and very enjoyable atmosphere. It was a great opportunity to win some House points.”

Lower sixth form trainee lifeguards made a major contribution, helping with timing and marshalling in addition to their lifeguarding roles.

Coach Myles Strudwick, who prepared them for the running of the event, said assisting in the organisation of the competition provided a great opportunity: “It gave them practical experience of leisure centre events, and what goes into preparing for and running these. It means school isn’t just providing basic lifeguarding training but the chance to take part in real-life experiences too.”
