REIGNING Miss Yorkshire Chloe McEwen shared her mental health journey with sixth formers at Ripon Grammar School.
Alongside the Harrogate branch of the mental health charity MIND, she has been talking to Year 12 and 13 students throughout the county about her challenges, which began when she was just 16 when her life took an unexpected turn.
She experienced severe psychotic episodes on and off for about eight months, leading to a
diagnosis of bipolar disorder.
“Looking back, I now understand how powerful it is to talk openly about mental health,” she says.
“That’s why I feel deeply connected when I speak to teens who may be facing any challenges. It feels as though I’m speaking to a younger version of myself, the girl who was riddled with fear, anxiety and totally lost inside – and silently crying out for help.
“It’s incredibly important to remind young people that there are always tools and support available; even when it feels difficult to see them."
The event was part of the school's sixth form's personal development enrichment programme, offering presentations and workshops on a wide range of topics aimed at benefiting students' personal development."
“It was a privilege to share my story and mental health tools with students at RGS," said Chloe. “I truly believe that no matter how tough things get, there is always a way forward.
“If you’re going through a tough time, please remember – with time, everything gets easier. You are never alone, and there is always support out there.
“MIND in Harrogate is part of an incredible global organisation that can guide you through challenging moments. I’ve been volunteering with MIND in Harrogate since being crowned Miss Yorkshire in 2023, and I’m incredibly proud to offer my support where I can.
“Please, always reach out for help. There is real strength and power in asking for support.”
